Hawkins Middle School
Youth in Government or YIG  is a national program of the YMCA that involves thousands of teens nationwide in state-organized, model-government programs. Students from every corner of the U.S. have the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement and to, quite literally, practice democracy.
Students at Hawkins will tackle everyday problems they experience and will formulate a plan to correct these societal ills via practicing the experience of researching, writing, debating and passing student led legislation in a mock state assembly of 7th and 8th graders. The YIG convention is held in Nashville and is attended by thousands of Tennessee youth from all across the state.
